If anyone can use EFT on their own, why should I work with you?
While many use EFT without a practitioner, and our goal is to teach clients how to effectively use EFT on their own, there are some situations in which the emotion, trigger, thoughts, behaviors and/or patterns are so intense or ingrained that working alone can cause retraumatization. Working alone in a state of high stress can cause emotions to intensify and the pattern to repeat instead of being reworked. Clinical EFT professionals focus on keeping the nervous system calm and maintaining a coregulation so your stress response stays minimal. By doing so, clients can get to the root of the issue quicker and without so much discomfort.
For example, if we are rating the discomfort on a scale of 1-10 and the situation has an intensity of 6 for you, then by working with an accredited EFT practitioner that is focused on keeping the nervous system in safe mode can help the energy and thoughts revolving around the event release with more ease and speed. Once you and your practitioner have worked together on deep-seated issues, you can use EFT anytime you experience heightened emotions. Please keep in mind we suggest working with a professional if the intensity is above 6 using the same 1-10 scale. In all situations that are emotionally triggering, trauma experts and EFT practitioners suggest working with someone skilled so you don’t get retraumatized.
What should I expect during our sessions?
Initial Consult: Throughout every session, my primary goal is that you feel safe and not retraumatized. We keep the first consultation simple and no more than 30 minutes. It helps us gather basic information about each other, discuss what you want to work on, and make sure I work with the events you are experiencing. This is a time for you to ask questions and have EFT explained in more detail. From here, we determine the next best step for you.
6-Session Package: This is the preferred route to quickly and effectively dive into limited beliefs and unhealthy or undesirable patterns. The first meeting is a 90-minute Discovery Session. It is a time for me to ask questions and get relevant information important to the issue. It’s a safe space; you only talk about what is comfortable to share. Unlike talk therapy, we won’t “get in the weeds”of your childhood. Throughout most sessions you will likely hear me ask questions like, ‘What happened and with whom, do you feel a sensation in your body talking about it and where is that sensation, and is there an associated emotion? Before the end of the Discovery Session, we will have discussed a working goal and we will use this as a roadmap for our upcoming sessions. We will go over your current coping skills and available resources to see if we can develop a more consistent approach for them to integrate into a daily routine.
The remaining 5 sessions will be ‘tapping’ on what was uncovered during the discovery session along with any associated memories that arise along the way. It is common for buried thoughts to appear as they are likely all part of a larger pattern and/or underlying limited belief. Some think of it as similar to the layers of an artichoke; to get to the heart you have to do a little peeling.
3-Session Package: This shorter package is for experienced EFT users seeking help with a more intense issue or limiting belief. It builds upon previous EFT work allowing us to get right to the issue. This offering can be helpful for an upcoming work situation or job change, conflict in a relationship, or breaking an unwanted habit.
Single Session: Sometimes, ‘life happens’ during our working together, and a new stress arises that needs addressing before reaching your goal. Or, perhaps you’re a seasoned EFT user or a therapist and during your personal work an issue was uncovered and some help to get back on track is feasible. A one-time session can benefit past & current clients that need help addressing a challenge, especially if it involves high intensity charges. EFT practitioners suggest no one work independently with moderate to severely difficult memories, not even the professionals.
It is worth noting: I actually do not give advice, but I do ask a lot of questions designed to provoke thought. I will help you determine what you want to do in your life. It is a lot easier to figure it out when your nervous system isn’t at play.
What if I don't like EFT or find it helpful?
This would be highly unusual. While you will likely feel calmer after just one round of tapping, EFT only works if you use it. Like going to the gym for a physical workout, results occur with repeated effort. My clients have found EFT to be a good use of their time. Feel free to see the testimonials section to see what others are saying about EFT.
Are there any side effects to using EFT?
No known side effects. However, while you will never have to “relive” a trauma, your sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) can become activated. My goal is to keep your MindBody feeling safe, which means if you or I feel the intensity is increasing too much, we will redirect to get your nervous system back to a calm place before proceeding. I do this by temporarily changing the focus, reorienting, using grounding techniques, taking a break to drink water, and sometimes I interrupt altogether (not my favorite but it works). All of these techniques are intentional and designed to remind your nervous system that you are safe, right here, right now. As a certified practitioner, my specialty is watching for cues that the nervous system is trying to engage.
Do I have to tell you about my trauma for EFT to work? What do you need to know?
EFT is client-led, which means that, unlike talk therapy, you don’t have to divulge anything you don’t want to. We work on a specific issue in your life that you and I agree upon in advance and then we develop a working goal so at no point are you walking into an area you’re not ready to face. By creating a goal in advance we stick to the topic which allows for fewer distractions and quicker remedies. You do not have to share anything you feel uncomfortable discussing.
Beneficially, if there is a past event or trauma that you would like to get out of your working memory but it’s too hard/shameful/fearful/too re-traumatizing to share, please tell me that something like this exists for you. EFT practitioners are also trained with specific methods in which no part of the memory is verbally discussed but the benefit of EFT is still successfully achieved. Another fantastic aspect of EFT is that it works like a charm, even if you don’t know what event caused the limiting belief, unwanted behavior, or trauma.
If you want to work on resolving emotions around a specific situation or event, just fill me in with the basics: What happened, With whom, What emotion are you experiencing talking about it and Where does that sensation reside in your body? Often, a pattern of thinking or feeling will organically arise through tapping sessions because your nervous system is calm. We tap on each of these events relating to your goal–this is how we quickly get to the root of the issue using EFT without dissecting every year of your life.
What's the difference between EFT and Talk Therapy?
There are many. First, EFT usually takes weeks instead of years to see actual results. EFT is totally client-led, and I don’t have to know your whole story–we cut to the chase and dig right into whatever you want to work on. We deal with one issue at a time, so you will not feel overwhelmed. I don’t give advice but rather help guide you to make the best decision for yourself. Because it’s vital that you feel safe for EFT to work, we only go as fast as the slowest part of you wants to go, and we stick to the goal.
Finally, EFT focuses on the connection between the MindBody, not just the mind. When we tap on the meridian points, the nervous system is less activated which allows for a calmer mind to see these events with a larger tolerance. This is one of the biggest reasons it’s so effective–because what happens to the body is stored in the mind and the body keeps score. By keeping the nervous system calm, my clients are able to process what happened while freeing themselves of the stored memories and trapped emotions.
Who does EFT work for?
EFT works for everyone. It might just be what you've been looking for if you:
- Are done seeking a magic fix (although it's easy to do, it requires some effort).
- Have tried other modalities (including talk therapy) but the patterns keep coming back.
- Are committed to self-improvement and changing your perspective.
- Want to take an alternative, holistic approach to improving your life.
- Seeking alternative ideas to taking medication or additional medication.
EFT has been scientifically proven to help:
EFT seems weird/too woo-woo/too good to be true. Does it really work?
I’ve worked with many skeptics, and they have all experienced reduced stress around the presenting situation. EFT is based on scientific principles, so even though it may sound a little strange, clinical research has proven over and over again that it works! Be open to the possibility and see where it takes you. Instead of asking, “What if it doesn’t work,” ask, “How will my life change when it DOES?” There’s absolutely no risk on your part to give it a try.
